This qualification covers workers who develop and facilitate programs for young people through a range of community based programs designed to address the social, behavioural,
health, welfare, developmental and protection needs of young people.

This work may be undertaken through employment in community, government and welfare agencies and workers will be:

  • Responsible for implementing policies and guidelines of the employing organisation
  • Largely self directed with fairly autonomous decision making capacity under the indirect supervision of a manager.

The training sessions, structure, and course timetable are designed to accommodate a wide range of student needs. Both part-time and full-time students will find the course not only challenging but convenient. The course can be completed full-time through the structured program at Northreach Bible College, or on-the-job by negotiated arrangements with CALAM Training.

The course may be completed over several years part-time, on campus or as a distance student. For those studying on campus, there are normally two student intakes per year, at the beginning of 1st Semester (February) and 2nd Semester (July).

The Certificate IV in Youth Work covers the broad range of competencies identified as important to quality leadership at lay level within churches. Students can expect to learn from hands-on involvement in an extensive range of modules.

See the list of units along in the table opposite. Training is not just done in the classroom, but involves practical ministry. You will be involved in real-life youth work ministry, where you put into practice what you are being taught.

As a full-time student you can anticipate being involved in equivalent to 18-20 hours of class-based training per week, as well as 10-15 hours of study outside of the classroom. All modules have a "practical" component built directly into them. This means that you have the chance to put what you are learning "into practice". Your weekly study load includes training sessions and study time and practical application. It is important to take all this into consideration when planning your study load.

In addition to the above you will be required to:

  1. Place yourself under the direct discipling of a mentor chosen by yourself and agreed upon by CALAM Training
  2. Actively attend the worship services of your church, and participate in the ministry of your church.
  3. Be involved in an ongoing effort to make disciples.

Entry to this qualification is not subject to conditions.
